Project: Australian Museum Signage Program
Client: Australian Museum

Cunneen Signs is proud to support the Australian Museum through an ongoing relationship that spans internal and external signage, exhibition graphics, and wayfinding systems. As Australia’s oldest museum and a major cultural institution, the Australian Museum demands precision, consistency, and design excellence across every element of its public-facing environments—and we’re trusted to deliver just that.

Our work extends across a wide spectrum of signage needs, from durable external wayfinding to high-impact promotional displays for seasonal exhibitions. A standout example of this collaboration is the comprehensive internal signage program, brought to life in partnership with leading designers, and recognised in the World Design Awards. Cunneen Signs brought these designs to life through expert fabrication and installation across galleries, circulation spaces, and public zones.

Materiality played a central role in this project. We worked with a palette of premium finishes that reflect the Museum’s heritage and sustainability values, including recycled hardwoods, custom timber joinery, and repurposed heritage bronze, which was reused to form brass level identifiers from original site stock. These details reinforce the Museum’s layered history while contributing to a contemporary visitor experience.

While the major internal refurbishment was not a live site, many of our subsequent installations have taken place in active public spaces. The Museum is a heritage-listed site, both inside and out, and our team has worked closely within these constraints—supporting DA submissions, advising on materials and fixing methods, and ensuring all signage meets both heritage requirements and the expectations of a world-class cultural destination.

Our long-standing relationship with the Australian Museum reflects Cunneen Signs’ commitment to craftsmanship, collaboration, and delivering signage solutions that are not only visually compelling but also deeply respectful of context and place.
