A Family Business Begins

Cunneen Signs was founded by Bryan and Joyce Cunneen as a partnership in Sydney. Focused on architectural signage and metalwork, the business quickly built a reputation for quality and reliability.

1972

A Defining Opportunity

After securing the rights to Wunderlich Ltd’s signage division, the business rebrands as Cunneen & Company Pty Ltd. With new stock, customer contacts and momentum, the company moves into its first dedicated premises in Meadowbank.

1976

Major Government Win

Cunneen wins its first significant government contract: illuminated signage for the NSW Police. To meet growing demand, the team establishes its own in-house bronze foundry, ensuring complete quality control over commemorative plaques and cast signage.

1985

A New Generation of Leadership

Founders Bryan and Joyce retire, and their son David Cunneen takes full ownership of the business at our current Holroyd location. Under David’s leadership, the company invests heavily in machinery and technology, expanding both capability and reputation.

1998

International Industry Recognition

Cunneen Signs becomes the first Australian company to win first place in the prestigious U.S.-based Electric Sign Competition, for the standout illuminated ‘Darling Walk’ sign in Darling Harbour.

Expanding the Business

Through the acquisition of Hadfield Sign & Print in Padstow and Archi-Type Engraving in Gosford, Cunneen grows its production capacity and specialist skills. Staff levels reach 45, and the company continues to win national signage awards.

2011

Strategic Growth Under New Management

Nicholas March is appointed General Manager, marking a key leadership evolution. With Nick overseeing day-to-day operations, David shifts focus to long-term direction and innovation. Operations are consolidated, new technology is introduced, and Cunneen delivers major projects like Ayers Rock Resort and Canberra Hospital. The business thrives with a renewed focus on efficiency, capability, and client service.

A New Chapter in Leadership

Cunneen Signs remains proudly family-owned. While David Cunneen has stepped back from day-to-day operations, his continued involvement supports the business behind the scenes. With our newly appointed Managing Director Nicholas March and a dedicated leadership team now guiding the company, Cunneen Signs continues to evolve building on its legacy while embracing new ideas, talent and opportunities.

2025
